As energy prices began to rise in early 2008, the unprecedented cost to business meant that increasingly, energy purchasing and risk management was becoming a board-level issue. The challenge for Octopus was to build awareness with and gain the confidence of a new c-level audience.

Under the theme of 'When the lights go off: managing the risks of energy supply and demand in the UK' Octopus developed an issues-led PR programme across national and broadcast media that would enhance Utilyx' reputation as the UK's leader in energy price and carbon risk management.

The result: Utilyx featured in 116 articles across national, broadcast and trade titles, rapidly becoming a preferred commentator for national broadcasters including BBC, ITV, Radio 4 and Radio 5. Over 80% of coverage secured included comment from a Utilyx spokesperson, while nearly 50% of coverage was in the nationals, including The Times, The Guardian, Financial Times and The Daily Express. Utilyx' spokesperson Andrew Horstead was regularly quoted alongside government leaders such as Gordon Brown (on Radio 4's The World at One) and Vladimir Putin (in The Times' coverage of UK's dependence on overseas gas supplies).
